Music United the Generations

I had a great summer slow down, vacationing with family, relaxing by the pool, taking a few road trips and it wrapped up with a trip to Block Island, RI with friends.  Making time for play is one of my measures of success as I embrace life as a solopreneur.

When in Block Island, we were enjoying ourselves listening to live music when we saw folks showing up in disco attire and realized that we had showed up at Captain Nick’s on Disco night.

If someone had asked my group if anyone wanted to head to Disco night, I’m sure it would have been a hard no for all of us.

But, as the crowd changed, we enjoyed the outfits and new energy.

And, when the DJ started playing the music the fun really began. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves: people watching AND (some of us) dancing.

Many of my leadership coaching clients talk about the challenges of managing multiple generations. The next day my group observed that the dance floor was filled with all generations: boomers, gen X, millennials and gen Z.  And, they were all having a blast.

If the generations had discussed what decade of music was the best, there would have been a debate for sure.  If we had discussed what kind of music we wanted to hear we would have debated the options and I don't feel we would have landed on Disco night.

But, when the DJ started playing great songs, we all enjoyed it and we danced.

Sometimes we just need to hit the play button and not overthink the options. Here are a few resources I share with my clients when managing multiple generations. It's helpful to focus on what we have in common instead of our differences. Mauro Guillén | The Perennials: The Megatrends Creating a Postgenerational Society | Talks at Google
