A Spotlight on Intentional Rest

As we move into December, the days shorten, the light softens, (for some of us the weather keeps us home) and our pace naturally shifts. This time of year invites something we often resist: rest.

Not the “collapse-on-the-couch” kind of rest (though that has its place!), but intentional rest—the kind that makes space for reflection, integration, and incubation. Recently, I was moved by a post shared by Colleen Torell on LinkedIn about taking a conscious pause during a job search. Those of not searching need to hear the same thing!

Colleen reminded us that rest can feel counterintuitive when you’re trying to make progress. But sometimes:

Rest is the work. Rest is what allows clarity to return. Rest is how we prepare for what’s next.

If you’re feeling that tug to slow down—even just a little—take it seriously. You’re not quitting; you’re preparing. You’re creating the mental and emotional spaciousness to step into the next season with steadiness and intention.

The Long Dark Days as a Season for Incubation

December has a quiet magic. In nature, nothing is “doing.” Everything is conserving energy, storing nutrients, and strengthening roots beneath the frozen ground.

Humans need this, too.

This month, I’m inviting my clients (and myself!) to treat December as a time of incubation rather than acceleration:

  • Let ideas simmer.

  • Let decisions ripen.

  • Let your nervous system downshift.

  • Let next year’s clarity emerge in its own time.

When you allow yourself this pause, you become more insightful, more grounded—and ultimately more effective.

Wishing You a Season of Quiet Growth (and the happiest of holidays!)

As the year winds down, my hope for you is simple:

  • May you give yourself permission to rest.

  • May you honor the small steps you’ve taken.

  • May you trust that things are germinating, even if you can’t yet see them.

  • And may you enter the new year grounded, renewed, and ready.
